New Single – FREE DOWNLOAD!

Hey!

I’ve been doing a lot of recording, as you may know, for my upcoming album and for the New Times Music Awards (Deadline is the 5th, I’m nearly ready!). I’ve got an awesome version of my new-ish song called “Never Let Me Go” recorded and I’m releasing it as a single!

You can listen to it right now at music.lorenradis.com if you like, but the only way to get a download of it is to come to my Farmer’s Show tomorrow night (Thursday the 1st) and buy a little something, I’m giving away free downloads with every purchase!

Hope to see you there, I’m on Chorro Street in SLO from 6:30 to 8:30 on Thursday September 1st!

Life Water International

I don’t do this super often but I wanna talk about someone other than me for a change, ha.

Life Water International is an international aid organization based here in San Luis Obispo that brings clean drinking water to communities world-wide that otherwise would go without. Here’s an excerpt from their mission statement on their website (http://www.lifewater.org).

“Together with in-country partners and the local communities themselves, Lifewater pursues these three overarching goals:

  • Community well-being improved through water, sanitation, and hygiene education (WASH).
  • Empowered communities. Community members manage their own sustainable water systems and sanitation facilities.
  • Spiritual transformation. Communities experience restored relationships between people, with God, and with their natural environment. “

Anyway, they’re up for a grant from Giving Of Life (.com) that would be such an incredible gift if they won it. You can help by going to this link and voting for the Lifewater project. They don’t ask you to sign up for their newsletter or surrender any personal information, you don’t even need an account to vote. If this project speaks to you, go vote for it and let your friends know about it so they can do the same, and thanks!

There’s No Need To Be Alone

John Lennon recorded 6 different demos of his song “Real Love”. The three remaining Beatles, years after John’s death, got together and compiled one coherent song from those demos and original music they recorded in accomaniment.

It was comforting to hear that even a musician I respect as much as John Lennon had trouble writing his songs, re-writing and re-recording them time and again and even forgetting them altogether at times.

I’m working on a cover of “Real Love” and I thought it might be fun to share a little bit of the process with you.

Real Love (Cover) 6/20 by loren radis

Above is a super rough recording I did to lay down some of my ideas. The click track is in there (Just a simple drum-beat) and my scratch track (a quick demo take usually with one instrument and a voice that helps you keep track of where you are in the song) is in there too. This is the very first recording, a groundwork to build off of. More than likely none of what’s in this version will be in the final. If you find that interesting then that’s awesome.

I’ve got shows coming up, I went from none to 3 in the space of a few weeks. They’re all Farmer’s Market shows, I’ll be playing at Farmer’s on Chorro Street on June 30th, July 7th, and September 1st! They all start at 6:30pm, they’re all free, and they’ll all be awesome. See you there!

Thanks for reading,

Hey, in case you missed it, why not listen to the show (Which JP from KCPR was kind enough to record and put up online) at writersblockkcpr.blogspot.com ! It’s pretty fun, we talk about my music, my beautiful wife, and the extremely supportive live music community in and around SLO.

I Saw Blood, And A Bit of It Was Mine…

Iron & Wine - Kiss Each Other Clean

Kiss Each Other Clean

Iron & Wine’s newest album, Kiss Each Other Clean, Released January 25, 2010.

These are opinions:  The poetry on this album is phenomenal.  Sam Beam is a gifted lyricist.  This new style is really a great direction.  I don’t like overstating things, but I do it all the time anyway, so take all this with a grain of salt.  Or two.

I used to believe music could change your life, change people.  I have memories of songs that changed me, but those memories have been fading for years, and I’ve started to think it’d never happen again.

The first track on this album changed my life.  I haven’t heard a song that made me feel the way “Walking Far From Home” makes me feel in a very long time.  I make no promises that it’ll do the same for you, but I’ve long been a sucker for Sam Beam’s music.  His lyrics are peppered with beautiful and fresh imagery and his melodies are so simple but succinct.  Iron & Wine songs have always been some of the easiest for me to “Over-Listen” to.  They’re so catchy but still so deep that there’s always a new experience to be had when you listen again, and the tracks on Kiss Each Other Clean are no exception.

I highly recommend this album for anyone who’s already a fan of Sam Beam’s work, but I think it’s a great starting point for new listeners too.  If you like Damien Rice, Andrew Bird, Elliott Smith, Nick Drake, or good music, then give this album a try.

Thanks, talk to you later,

I’m Mr. November

The National - High Violet (Courtesy of Wikipedia)

The National - High Violet

Have you heard of The National?  They’re an incredible band, I can’t really describe their sound but it’s NOT like me at all, not folksy or acoustic.  They’re like Rock but so melodic and mellow, but then at times they really pour on the energy.  Their lyrics are just beautiful and poetic, I love ‘em.  They came out with a new album last year called High Violet and it’s awesome.  I can’t recommend it enough, although their previous album titled “Boxer” might be a better starting point for new listeners.  Check out this song “Mr. November“, if you dig that then you’ll probably like the rest of their stuff.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qzhNdCxhK28

So Iron & Wine and the Decemberists both put out new albums at the beginning of this year, “Kiss Each Other Clean” and “The King is Dead” respectively.  I haven’t heard either one!  Some of my favorite bands and biggest influences and I haven’t heard either one… I don’t know what’s wrong with me.

I was kinda disappointed by The Decemberists last album, “The Hazards of Love”, so is this one different, the same, better, worse?   I don’t wanna get my hopes up and then be let down again, have you heard it, what do you think?

I’m really excited for the new Iron & Wine album.  I probably have my hopes up too high for that one but Sam Beam so consistently changes his style and puts out something you haven’t heard before, I’m really looking forward to seeing what his new direction is.  Bands have to do that, kind of re-invent themselves every so often, otherwise it all just keeps sounding the same and we get tired of it.

Oh, I’ve written a new song, it’s my first in almost 6 months.  I don’t know what I think of it yet, don’t know if you’ll ever get to hear it, but I thought I’d let you know I’m still working on new material.

Thanks!  Talk to you later,
